Looking Through The Lens

The NELA River Collaborative project builds upon the growing momentum of efforts already underway to transform the Los Angeles River into a "riverfront district" and to create a focal point of community revitalization. For more information visit www.mylariver.org

Time is rushing by and Youth Voices is now in the midst of the media workshops. Students from all three of the NELA schools explored the technical and creative possibilities of photography by taking pictures of key places in their community. Some of these pictures capture the essence of a location, while others invite the viewer to experience the place in a deeper more emotional way that allows us to understand the importance of the hotspot to the student photographer.

Students will continue to capture images even as we move on to our sound and video workshops -- collecting more and more media using newly acquired digital literacy skills. The student producers will pull together all of these media assets to build an interactive digital mural that will create a virtual tour of their neighborhood, highlighting their hotspots and telling their story.

Enjoy a sampling of the student producers' photos; look out for more of their work in the coming weeks.
