This past week the Youth Voices student producers entered the collaborative phase of their "My Neighborhood" project. The students from each school (ArtLAB, The L.A. Leadership Academy, and The L.A. River School) were asked to work together to build a Google Map that features place markers for selected hotspots they had previously identified on their personal maps. They were encouraged to add additional assets to each entry including, descriptions, links, and pictures. (The students will be able to update these assets as they take part in the multi-media workshops and produce their own photos, audio and video)
This process of adding a more traditional geographic lens to their maps allowed for new sets of complex relationships to be inserted and recognized by the students, including the diversity of hotspots and the relationships and memories attached to each of them. The visualization of these complexities further highlights what makes their neighborhoods unique, rich in stories, and most importantly, what makes it theirs.
Look for updates and more as the Youth Voices student producers begin to photograph their neighborhoods next week.
Below are the collaborative maps the students have started to create. Click on the title of each map to go to their page.
