Stretching the length of historic Figueroa Street and criss-crossed by York Boulevard and the Avenues, Highland Park is one of LA's original suburbs. Its history is deeply meshed with the ever-evolving face of Los Angeles, but its character and feel are unique as defined by its shops, streets, homes, schools and most importantly its residents. Currently, it's home to one of LA's largest youth populations. With over 50% of the population under 30, who better to share a story of Highland Park's past, present and future, than its young residents? Departures Youth Voices, in partnership with the Arroyo Seco Academy at Franklin High School, is excited to launch its next installment in Highland Park.
The student producers will be engaged in a multimedia exploration and dialogue with their neighborhood and their place within it, connecting with their community face-to-face and through digital media and creating visual and audio expressions of the neighborhood where they attend school, work, live and play.
Follow us to see Highland Park, re-envisioned through the eyes and words of the student producers.
The student producers jumped right into the “My Neighborhood and Me” project creating power point presentations, 2D and digital maps, and engaging in a series of workshops where they were introduced to creative and technical aspects of photography, audio and video production. The constructivist aspect of the project allowed students to put these new ideas into action immediately, researching, documenting and sharing their experiences in their community. It was a fast paced and arduous adventure that yielded wonderful insightful work.
