Youth Voices is working with students from the Los Angeles River School to re-imagine the L.A. River and the surrounding communities as part of the Northeast Los Angelels Riverfront Collaborative. The students have formed teams to explore and investigate their communities, map assets, collect and share stories, data and community input for their projects. All the while they are learning and expanding their knowledge of digital media and civic engagement. Follow their work here and on Instagram and Twitter by using #kcetyv.
We selected San Fernando Rd. as our community cause because we believe that adding stop lights, a bike lane, along with fixing the pot holes and adding wider/extensive sidewalks will improve our community.
Here are some comments we received on our website:
Very quickly we learned that we had to improve our presentation skills to talk to the public more efficiently. We needed to do this because in order to accomplish our goal we had to talk to the community, share our ideas for the street, and hear their voices on what they wanted to see done.
We learned that one step to fix San Fernando Rd. is to contact and request services from the Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services. We tried to contact them for an interview but we were not able to schedule anyone.
An important thing we learned from this project is that in order to make something happen in the neighborhood you should go talk to the Neighborhood Council. We presented our community cause there and received support for our idea and our design. They encouraged us to continue to push for our project and talk to Council Member Gil Cedillo's office in order to fix San Fernando Rd. by adding stop lights, a bike lane, fixing the pot holes and adding wider, more extensive sidewalks.
Our next steps is to continue informing people on twitter about what is happening with our project. Other members of the community can get involved by encouraging the City Council to make San Fernando Rd. a safer place.
Fix San Fernando Road ASAP!!!!!
