Youth Voices is working with students from the Los Angeles River School to re-imagine the L.A. River and the surrounding communities as part of the Northeast Los Angelels Riverfront Collaborative. The students have formed teams to explore and investigate their communities, map assets, collect and share stories, data and community input for their projects. All the while they are learning and expanding their knowledge of digital media and civic engagement. Follow their work here and on Instagram and Twitter by using #kcetyv.
Describe the cause your team identified, investigated and documented.
Our community cause project is improving San Fernando Road. The street has narrow sidewalks and no bike lane. Cyclists who try to ride there are in danger of getting run over by cars.
Why did your team select this cause?
Our team chose this cause because San Fernando Road is the street that we always take to school. So we need to make a difference by pushing for wider sidewalks and a bike lane.
What did you learn about this issue in the community?
We learned that working with the community makes a big difference. Community members are the ones who should have the biggest voice in changes throughout the community.
What did the community have to say about your cause? Were you surprised by any information they provided or did they confirm your ideas?
When we presented to the Cypress Park Neighborhood Council, some of the members told us that they have already been talking about putting more lights because it is too dark; and also some bike lanes.
Did they provide possible solutions to the community cause your team identified?
Yes, they provided possible solutions related to the new housing on San Fernando Road -- there is an opportunity to have wider sidewalks and more lights there.
What are other ideas towards improving this aspect of your community that you've come up with or discovered?
Some ideas on improving the community were to get help from City Councilmembers, and develop a petition to make San Fernando Road a better place.
What is the community support for your cause?
Members of the Neighborhood Council said they are willing to help us on our community cause, and also Jose Rodriguez from Councilmember Gil Cedillo's said he would try to help us.
How does your team plan on encouraging community involvement in your team's cause?
We plan on continuing our call to put more lights, bike lanes and widen the sidewalks on San Fernando Road. We need to connect with all the people that go to school, work and live near the street. These are the people who would be most affected by its improvement.
