Youth Voices is working with students from the Los Angeles River School to re-imagine the L.A. River and the surrounding communities as part of the Northeast Los Angelels Riverfront Collaborative. The students have formed teams to explore and investigate their communities, map assets, collect and share stories, data and community input for their projects. All the while they are learning and expanding their knowledge of digital media and civic engagement. Follow their work here and on Instagram and Twitter by using #kcetyv.
The River Girls
What is your vision for improvement in your neighborhood and why is it important to take action?
Our vision for improving the LA River is to beautify the surroundings.
What is something you want to improve in your neighborhood?
Our team wants to improve the LA River by improving the lighting for bikers and pedestrians, adding water fountains, benches and places to rest so people can take a break while looking at the view.
Why is it important to improve this aspect of your neighborhood?
It is important to improve this aspect because it's where a lot of people go to hangout and exercise. It will help the overall look of the river. Changing this may help bring more people to the neighborhood.
Where would you go in your neighborhood to investigate and document this issue?
Our group will focus on the Elysian Valley side of the river where the bike path is. The benches will be placed near the bridge where people can relax and look at the river when it looks its best.
Who is affected by this issue in your neighborhood, and how would things change for them once you've improved the situation?
The people that are affected by this issue is everyone that lives around the neighborhood. The changes can help the environment be safer for community members and tourists.
What are two possible ways that you can take action towards solving this issue?
A possible way that our group can take action is by sharing information on our plan and asking for input from community members and the people in this area. Another way that we can take action is by talking to the Elysian Valley Neighborhood Council.
If anything was possible, what would you do to improve this aspect of your community?
We would achieve our idea of improving this area we would add more benches, light posts, and water fountains. When people travel to the river, these items can help them become more comfortable with their surroundings. They will want to come more often. With more street lights they have more choices in the evening to go there and feel safe. The water fountains can ensure the people who exercise stay hydrated.
