Exploration: Ida Allen-Auerbach Field Trip Observations

Students from the Los Feliz Charter School for the Arts (LFCSA) and the Living Museum Sycamore Grove are collaborating with Departures Youth Voices to document their exploration of the area and develop interactive tools that will become part of the Living Museum's community resources. Follow the students as they work with community residents and learn about the history of the neighborhood, urban planning, and placemaking.

Below are the student's observations from their field trip to the Sycamore Grove District in Highland Park. To read more about the trip click here.

We went to Heritage Square, and walked through the house that are part of the museum and saw their restored insides.

The houses we saw there really represented Los Angeles. Los Angeles is different houses, cultures, personalities and people, and the houses we saw showed all of those things. They left a lasting impression on me and I still dream about them even weeks later!! :)

Questions to investigate:

  • Did any of the owners of the houses know each other?
  • Are there any houses that did not have to be restored?
  • On average, how many people lived in one house?
  • How many of the people that lived in the houses went to church?
