Sycamore trees at the Lummis House

Students from the Los Feliz Charter School for the Arts (LFCSA) and the Living Museum Sycamore Grove are collaborating with Departures Youth Voices to document their exploration of the area and develop interactive tools that will become part of the Living Museum's community resources. Follow the students as they work with community residents and learn about the history of the neighborhood, urban planning, and placemaking.

Below are the student's observations from their field trip to the Sycamore Grove District in Highland Park. To read more about the trip click here.

I attend to the Los Feliz Charter School for the Arts (LFCSA) in the 5th grade.

I went on a field trip to the Lummis House in Sycamore Grove. The house of Charles Lummis, an editor of the Los Angeles Times.

As I was walking through the estate I observed many different things such as the many different well cultivated plants and trees. Also how he designed and built (with rocks from the Arroyo Seco) his house to look like a castle.

Questions to investigate:

  • I wondered why he went on his journey from Ohio to Los Angeles.
  • Was it a pilgrimage?
  • Or did he simply want to get out of Ohio?
