The San Gabriel River stretches from the San Gabriel Mountains, high atop San Antonio Point, down to Seal Beach and the Pacific Ocean. Along its 60 mile route it crosses 19 cities, including the city of El Monte. Departures has embarked on an exploration of this mighty river -- the geography, history, people, and the diverse communities along its path.

The River is familiar territory for the students at Mountain View High School, as it runs along the school's eastern side bordering the athletic fields. Students from the school's VISTA Academy are the newest participants in the Departures Youth Voices Program. The Academy provides the students with a strong foundation in media that they will be able to pull from as they embark on their work exploring their community and their relationship to the San Gabriel River. Along the way becoming advocates for their community and leading efforts to promote positive change.
