Community Field Trip: Elysian Valley

A reflection of the neighborhood
A reflection of the neighborhood

The NELA River Collaborative project builds upon the growing momentum of efforts already underway to transform the Los Angeles River into a "riverfront district" and to create a focal point of community revitalization. For more information visit www.mylariver.org

You never know what you may find when you go walking in your neighborhood -- a favorite spot, a lost memory, and perhaps new connections to the streets, houses, buildings, and people who make up the neighborhood.

The Youth Voices student producers from ArtLAB had an opportunity to do just that when they took a field trip to Elysian Valley, visiting the Community Recreation Center, Nomad Gallery, the L.A. River and many spots in between. Along the way they took pictures and conducted interviews with each other and community residents, including Damon Robinson, owner/artist of Nomad Gallery. They talked about important places and people in their community and what it means to be part of Elysian Valley.

Below are some of the students' pictures that capture the many aspects of the community. Look out for more of the students' work as they continue to create and collect media to tell their neighborhood story.
