For our newest installment of Departures Youth Voices, we are partnering with three diverse high schools; the Los Angeles River School, ArtLAB and the Los Angeles Leadership Academy. The three schools are located near the L.A. River and serve students from Atwater Village, Cypress Park, Elysian Valley, Glassell Park, Lincoln Heights and other Northeast L.A. neighborhoods. This area is rich with the earliest history of Los Angeles marked by the winding and nurturing path of the River -- and may very well be the beginning of a new chapter in the the River's relationship with the city and the residents along its banks. This is an area Departures and Youth Voices have explored before and one we are continuing to navigate as part of the Northeast Los Angeles River Collaborative (NELA RC) - an interdisciplinary team of organizations engaged in envisioning a riverfront district along the Glendale Narrows.
Youth Voices is an integral part of this re-imaging of the River with students exploring their communities, mapping assets, collecting and sharing stories, data and community input on the revitalization of the River and surrounding communities. All the while learning and expanding their knowledge of multi-media production, digital literacy and civic engagement.
Our three partner schools have unique missions that prioritize commitment to their community through environmental stewardship, creative arts and social justice. We look forward to each group of students bringing new skills and experiences to Youth Voices. Follow us to see the work of the student producers as it develops through their exploration of their neighborhoods and as they begin to re-envision the role of the L.A. River in their community.
