Building a Message: More Counselors Will Equal More Student Success

WELA YMCA Youth Institute, is part of the Building Healthy Communities (BHC) initiative funded by The California Endowment.Youth are exploring and investigating how the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) can empower and improve their local school communities.

My team has become advocates for more counselors in schools. This cause is very important to our team because our entire school only has one counselor, so it was really important for our team to speak about the importance of school counselors. When we began the focus of our project was different, but when we began to look at the situation with the small number of counselors we knew that this should be our community cause.

The overall response to our project from my community has been positive. Many people have agreed with our cause. Even though the process has been very challenging, we have learned how to share important information with the public and get people involved.

Some of the most important evidence we collected came from our interviews. Vrisa Dominguez showed us an example of how a counseling program can have a big impact on student's lives if there are enough counselors to provide students with one on one attention.

We believe the solution is to secure funds from the Local Control Funding Formula to hire more counselors to be able to meet with each student one on one. We are going to continue to put all our information together and share it with the community

Community members can get involved by helping us spread the word about our cause.
