Workshop 10: Cleaning Assets & Map Building

Description: After the field shoots, students will download their photos and capture their video and audio interviews into their workstations and save them in shared group folders. Students will work together to edit video interviews into final clips, including intro and outro sequences following the templates set for Departures video interviews. Students will upload edited footage to file sharing platforms such as YouTube and Flickr and embed their files into the shared class Google Map. Time: 10 hours

Workshop Breakdown

1. Download and Review Recorded Media

Students will index and log their tapes and capture the footage into iMovie or Final Cut Pro. They will share the footage with the class to discuss their successes and challenges, quality of footage, and summarize the content of the interviews. File management is key to an organized and successful production. Utilizing the "Export Media Guidelines Page"* students will learn to export media files properly.

2. Edit Media

Extending the lessons from Workshop #7 (video production), students will use editing software to cut interviews into 2-5 minute clips based around topics discussed in the interviews. Teacher will review edited footage in groups (the pacing of student editing varies depending on the students, the quality of the interview, and interviewee.) Students will select the videos to be included in the Google Map, and isolate the preselected Departures interviews for delivery to the producers.

3. Collaborative Map

Review how to upload content to YouTube and Flickr and embed final content into the shared Google Maps.
