Workshop 9: Interviewing Community Member/Expert

Description: The overlap of the student and the Departures production is most significant at this point. Student producers will be assigned to interview preselected hotspots (as determined in Workshop #8) that will be incorporated in the Departures series, and potentially be broadcast on the air. Interviewed historians, scholars and experts will share with students topics of historical and cultural importance to their neighborhood. Time: 2-3 hours (per interview)

Workshop Breakdown

1. Interview Prep

For each of the preselected hotspots, students will research persons of interest, develop a series of topics and questions and present their findings to the class. The class will in turn share ideas for additional questions. A Departures producer will schedule the interview, but students will prep, including pre-checking equipment, and preparing a production schedule (release forms, location and directions to site, and questions).

2. Setup and Breakdown

Students under guidance of a Departures producer, cameraman, and/or technician, will setup and breakdown an interview set including camera and tripod, lighting, audio, and blocking of the subject and his/her space.
