No, you're not imagining it. From the Los Angeles Daily News:

Nearly two-thirds of the major roads in the Los Angeles area are in poor condition, earning the metro region the second-worst ranking in the nation, according to statistics released today by a national transportation research group.
Los Angeles roads were ranked the second-worst among the nation's regions with populations greater than 500,000, according to a report by TRIP, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit group, which analyzed government data from 2008.

Los Angeles also ranked second-worst for automobile operating costs due to poor roads, estimated at $746 annually. The dollar amount figures in repairs and maintenance, increased fuel consumption and tire wear.

The report listed 63 percent of Los Angeles' major thoroughfares as being in poor condition -- more than twice the national average for large population areas of 24 percent. It also said only 5 percent of major streets were in good condition.

Set in a futuristic Downtown Los Angeles that is policed by LAPD drones, 'The Raven' is a short film about one man with special powers on the run from the authorities. Running from what appear to be the far-off prodigy of military Predator drones, Chris Black uses telekinetic powers to evade, destroy, and otherwise thwart the LAPD. Trust us, you haven't seen the LAPD this bad.

The short film, made on a $5000 budget, is attracting a lot of attention, even from big studios like Universal. According to the Latino Review, the studio is in talks with Mark Wahlberg to work the project. For more details, check out the blog post that tipped us off.

After declaring a financial state of emergency, Governor Schwarzenegger ordered that over 150,000 state workers take three unpaid furlough days each month, starting in August. Critics have said that the move is intended to pressure the legislature into passing a budget, but Schwarzenegger says that that it was necessary to avoid writing I.O.U.s in order to make payments.

"Our cash situation leaves me no choice but to once again furlough state workers until the Legislature produces a budget I can sign," Schwarzenegger said in a statement.

The state is five weeks overdue on passing a budget.

Hundreds of protesters took to the street show their disapproval of SB 1070, despite the fact that United States District Court Judge Susan Bolton halted key provisions of the law from taking effect, including components that would force immigrants to keep papers proving their status on their person at all times and another that would allow state and local law enforcement to imprison illegals and turn them over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (known as "ICE").

City and state officials are responding to the salary upset in Bell by considering measures designed to increase transparency and cap salaries. City officials from around the state will meet in Sacramento Thursday to consider ideas to increase transparency and limit abuse, including the implementation of a state-wide database that tracks city officials' salaries. The state legislature is also processing several proposals derived from the Bell crisis that include ideas like tracking salaries on websites or having a salary cap for city officials.

The Bell scandal, which surfaced after a Los Angeles Times report that some city officials were making upwards of half a million dollars, including one who made $800,000 a year. Part time city council members were making $100,000 a year. The report prompted city and statewide outrage. Attorney General Jerry Brown has launched investigations into the legality of city's salary practices.
