Schwarzenegger Handing Out 3 Day Weekends To State Workers

After declaring a financial state of emergency, Governor Schwarzenegger ordered that over 150,000 state workers take three unpaid furlough days each month, starting in August. Critics have said that the move is intended to pressure the legislature into passing a budget, but Schwarzenegger says that that it was necessary to avoid writing I.O.U.s in order to make payments.

"Our cash situation leaves me no choice but to once again furlough state workers until the Legislature produces a budget I can sign," Schwarzenegger said in a statement.

The state is five weeks overdue on passing a budget.
