Officials at Yosemite National Park this afternoon emphasized that it remains open while a wildfire burns outside its borders to the west in Mariposa County.
It's nearly a century since the wonderland of the Devil's Garden, a fantastic jumble of cacti and ocotillo just east of San Gorgonio Pass, was utterly obliterated by collectors looking to populate fashionable Los Angeles desert gardens.

Friday marks the first trip of the year to one of the so-called outer islands at Channel Islands National Park. Those three land masses--Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Barbara--are far enough from the mainland that during winter, seas get a bit too rough for safe passage.
