Happy Valentine's Day from KCET! We want 2014 to be a fun year for you and your Valentine, so we partnered with local Southern California businesses to come up with twelve great date nights.
But you don't need to be dating in order to enjoy these prizes. It could be that you become the most popular person in your group of friends this year.
Please note that for some of these, there are specific dates on which the events are happening. For others, they may include expiration dates.
Contest Rules (PDF).
THE GREAT DATES:
Catalina Boat Ride, Zip Lining, and Lunch at Bluewater Grill
You know that old saying "The early bird catches the boat to Catalina so they can go zip lining."? You don't? Well, we may have made it up. This date is a whole days' worth of adventure. First you'll hop aboard the Catalina Flyer, who've donated two round trip tickets to and from Balboa Pavilion. Once you've arrived, enjoy a Zip Line Eco Tour of Catalina, propelling down 5 different zip lines, reaching speeds of 45 miles an hour. All of that excitement will put you in the mood for a relaxing meal at Bluewater Grill, who've donated a $50.00 gift certificate. Then head back home and start planning your next romantic excursion. (Or have a nap.)
Couples Spa Package from Burke Williams
Sometimes, the best activity you can do with someone you're close to is to just relax. Since 1984, Burke Williams has been making it possible guests to experience the kind of luxury treatments once only available at high-end hotels. Add to the romance that Burke Williams was founded by, and is still owned by a married couple, and it's no wonder that we think their donation of 2 Deluxe Pure Relaxation Massages or Spa Style Facials & 2 Choices of Enhancements or Peels makes a Couple's Spa Experience at Burke Williams a truly great date.
Tickets to the L.A. Ballet at the Alex Theatre & Dinner at Far Niente Ristorante (March 15th)
How very! You'll kick of your year of great dates with an Italian dinner and the Los Angeles Ballet's performance of "QUARTET". The Alex Theatre donated two tickets to the ballet, and Far Niente Ristorante has donated $100.00 (gratiuity not included) so that you and your date can try to re-enact the love scene from 'Lady & the Tramp' as you enjoy fresh, North Italian cuisine.
VIP Tickets to Conan and Dessert at Novo Café
What's the only way to do a thing right in Los Angeles? The VIP way! That's why we're giving you two VIP tickets to a live taping of "Conan" so you and your date can get the good seats and a backstage tour. And what's the best way replenish yourself after you burn off all of those calories from laughing? Free dessert from one of our favorite places in Burbank, Novo Cafe! They've donated $25.00 for you to spend however you see fit, but might we gently suggest the tiramisu?
Movie Tickets and Dinner at iPic Theaters
Ah, yes, the old classic "dinner and a movie." Only with iPic theaters, you can have both at once. iPic is the latest and greatest way to spend a night at the talkies, with wine, sliders, and recliners with blankets. It's like you got all gussied up to enjoy a movie in your living room, only you have butlers, a high-quality personal chef, and a REALLY big tv. So, basically, you're Oprah.
L.A. Kiss & The Tilted Kilt (April 5th)
Because we like to change things up, and because we wanted to include dates that really showed what a diverse place Southern California is, we reached out to L.A. Kiss Arena & The Tilted Kilt. Start your night with burgers and beers, then head over to The Honda Center where Gene Simmons' is adding his special touch of rock and roll to off-season football. Kisses and Kilts all around!
Tickets to The Aquarium of the Pacific and Dinner at P.F. Chang's in Long Beach
The Aquarium is an amazing date spot because you don't have to fill the silence with chatter. You can walk around, make funny faces at the fish and enjoy the calm of the water's reflection while you hold hands. Once you've made your way past the penguins and shuddered at the 150 sharks, you can make your way to P.F. Chang's with your $50.00 gift certificate and have a pleasant dinner.
Pinz Bowling, Arcade, and Pizza from Jerry's Deli
Start working on the various cute dances you're going to do when you get gutter balls, strikes, spares, and maybe even turkeys! Pinz bowling has donated a free hour of bowling, along with shoes, and $20.00 to spend at the arcade. And because you'll be famished after working out the ol' bowling arm, KCET is kicking in a large pizza and pitcher of soda from Jerry's Deli.
Tickets to MOCA and Lunch at Lemonade
Maybe spending a day in a former police car warehouse doesn't sound like the pinnacle of romance, but since the cars have been cleared out and the space filled with only the most modern of modern art, we're sure you'll have a lovely time. MOCA has donated two tickets for you, and Lemonade Cafe has donated $25 to spend on food and drink. And while you can't take any MOCA selfies, they do supply sketching pencils at the desk, so if you're so moved, you can draw your date's portrait.
Private Dance Lesson at Ballroom Blitz
In keeping with our theme of couple-owned businesses, Anthony & Susannah of Eagle Rock's Ballroom Blitz have donated one private lesson at their dance studio for you and your partner, valued at $75. You might be the next Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire; the next Beyoncé and Jay Z, the next Justin Timberlake and someone Justin Timberlake went out with who dances well. So put on your dancing shoes (and learn to use them)I
Rollerskating at Moonlight Rollerway
Are you ready to date like it's 1979? Strap on your skates and take a dreamy whirl around the rink with your special someone. Dedicate a song. Brush up on your backwards-skating techniques. Then enjoy how adorable your date looks while they cling to the wall as they try to get around the rink. Moonlight Rollerway is providing $50 toward skates, admission, and concessions. The matching uni-tards are all up to you.
VIP Tickets to Eat See Hear and Dinner from the Food Trucks
Did we mention how we feel about lovely couples starting businesses together? That's right. This is another one. And this one is so Los Angeles and so brilliant, it might just inspire you and your date to start your own company. But you'll have plenty of time to talk about that as you enjoy your up-close seats to any of this season's outdoor Eat, See, Hear screenings. Classic films, food trucks, and live music! And since Jeff and Sharon want to make sure you have a really special night, they've donated 2 'Fashionably Late' tickets (means you can come whenever and still get the best seats), and $20.00 to spend at the food trucks.
