Entry1:27 PM on April 21, 2011It is time once again for the LA Times Festival of Books! This weekend long book-lovers event has changed locations this year, moving to the University of Southern California campus. The location might have changed, but expect the same insightful panels and kid friendly shows.
-
Entry5:17 PM on May 18, 2010Come out to this panel on the most fascinating organ in our complex body: the brain. RED CAT describes "a colloquium, featuring acclaimed theater and opera director Peter Sellars, world-renowned visual artist Bill Viola, and Antonio Damasio, internationally-renowned neurologist and...
-
Entry1:09 PM on April 23, 2010Collage Dance Theatre will present its and critically-acclaimed show "Laundromatinee" in Historic Filipinotown in Los Angeles on Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24, 2010. "Laundromatinee" first delighted viewers and washday customers at Thriftiwash Laundromat in Santa Monica in...

Entry11:33 AM on April 19, 2010Not to state the obvious, but water is important. So what will happen when water becomes more scarce? How will our lives change as this natural resource proves to be a finite resource. This panel discussion attempts to answer these questions, and imagine the political, economic, and social ramifications facing a world short on water.
-
Entry5:45 PM on April 18, 2010Revolutionaries are often set apart, placed on pedestals as men and women who are greater than; they are able to set unthinkable change into motion. But we all have the potential to effect change. This Sunday, LACE hosts Manifesto! — an event where young people speak on the presence of injustice, and the potential for transcendence in this world.
-
Entry4:17 PM on April 17, 2010Theater is escapism. It is clean, unadulterated spectacle. But what goes into creating this spectacle? What is happening offstage while we sit in the dark, oblivious to that world? This screening, which is part of the Los Angeles Ring Festival, shows a different side of an operatic production.
-
Entry12:41 PM on April 17, 2010Not many have the guts to take a weighty masterpiece like Wagner's Ring Cycle and playfully reinvent the composition. But electronic musician Daedelus does just that, and does it fearlessly. Here is a chance to see Wagner deftly and tenderly placed in a contemporary framework.
-
Entry5:50 PM on April 15, 2010Think of the word architecture and regal Corinthian columns, suburban lined homes, or towering sky-scrapers might come to mind. But perhaps architecture means something broader, bigger? This panel looks at the annoying, and at times, entertaining, billboards that contribute to our cityscape and an architectural element in their own right.
-
Entry12:46 PM on April 15, 2010What makes something epic — saturating our culture, not only through different mediums, but through the generations? What narrative elements and underlying moral codes cause people to cling to certain stories and forget others? A MOCA panel tackles these questions — all through the lens of Wagner's Ring Cycle.
-
Entry4:25 PM on April 13, 2010Musical scores do not translate into cookie-cutter aural performances, each an identical copy of the one that came before. Off the page, beyond the notes, a lot happens that shifts and shapes sound — and often it is the conductor who is responsible for these variations. This Tuesday, James Conlon, Music Director of the LA Opera, speaks on his experience conducting Wagner's Ring Cycle.
-
Entry12:19 PM on April 11, 2010Can't decide whether to see drag queens, lip-synching housewives or a North Indian kathak dance number this weekend? Why choose? Spanning many different mediums, covering the political, social and beyond, REDCAT opens their stage to a group of artists whose work is anything but conventional. For all you arty rebels out there who prefer a bit of edge once the curtain rises, this is one not to miss.
-
Entry10:56 AM on April 11, 2010Los Angeles has been accused of having little-to-no history. The truth is, our little metropolis is rich in history and the Heritage Square Museum, with help from many local organizations, plans to set the record straight. Get a handle on our city's history at the Los Angeles Heritage Day — there'll be tours of historic homes, presentations, performances, not to mention, Pink's hot dogs.
-
Entry10:22 AM on April 11, 2010Living in a produce-heavy hot spot like Los Angeles, having frozen vegetables play a significant role in your diet is flat-out unacceptable. This Sunday, the Public School demystifies the Hollywood Farmer's Market and teaches us how to tell the ripe from the rotten. As if that weren't enough, they will also offer tips on what to make with the panoply of veggies that make it into your tote.
-
Entry11:16 AM on April 10, 2010With gastropubs popping up throughout the city and local brews showing up at swanky bars, there is no better time to get on the beer bandwagon. The second annual Los Angeles Beer Fest will do wonders for your beer knowledge with unlimited four-ounce pours from local and international brews alike. Buy tickets soon, folks. This one is bound to sell out.
-
Entry10:45 AM on April 8, 2010The Hammer hosts a bike night which includes, among other things, a screening of Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Finally, an event for those Angelinos who choose the trusty bicycle as their primary mode of transportation.
-
Entry2:51 PM on April 6, 2010While we live deep in the urban sprawl of Los Angeles, we rarely think of the calculated urban planning that creates our environment. And even less frequently do we question whether the current methods of urban planning are the best methods out there. UNPLANNED is an exhibition that takes new, radical and varied approaches to the ways we build and interact with our city. (Through July 2)
-
Entry10:15 AM on April 6, 2010In a truly democratic gesture, the Hammer invites filmmakers from far and wide to bring their (short) masterpieces to be screened for and judged by the public. As long as it is under 10 minutes, no genre, no style, no topic will be turned down. The truly amazing thing about this event? The Hammer is set up to show pieces recorded on old-school VHS.
-
Entry11:02 AM on April 3, 2010This year, spend Easter with the other bunny superstar. Peter Rabbit co-opts the holiday when he heads up a full day of activities and games at the Arboretum. Don't worry, there may be no Easter Bunny at this one, but there will be an overabundance of eggs to hunt for.
-
Entry11:43 AM on April 2, 2010It's been twenty-three years since RoboCop hit theaters and I have yet to see one cyborg join the LAPD. And so, to satisfy our fantasies of robotic law-enforcement, Cinefamily will screen the RoboCop trilogy at the (not-so-silent) Silent Movie Theater. Don't let this opportunity pass you by. Something as fantastic as a RoboCop-A-Thon does not come along too often in one's lifetime.
-
Entry12:25 PM on April 1, 2010Repurposing an out-of-commission military bomb to hold countless pages of poetry? Why not? Seems like one of the more pleasant things one could do with a bomb. Welcome April — aka National Poetry Month — with words of wisdom that come in very unconventional packaging.
-
Entry12:07 PM on April 1, 2010After the 5th's premiere in 1904, Gustav Mahler is reported to have said, "Nobody understood it. I wish I could conduct the first performance fifty years after my death." It is now close to one hundred years after Mahler's death, and Semyon Bychkov and the LA Phil are giving us twenty-first-century Angelinos a chance to see what we make of Mahler's celebrated symphony.
-
Entry11:54 AM on April 1, 2010Not many can tout that they single-handedly sparked a new religion. And even fewer can say that they created a film that now has its own festival circuit. The Coen Brothers have done both. So gather round all you dudes out there and pay homage to The Big Lebowski — a cult classic that made wearing a bathrobe terribly fashionable.
-
Entry11:40 AM on April 1, 2010One of the benefits of being a major cultural institution is that you get to celebrate your birthday all year long. So break out the party hats and streamers, MOCA is celebrating its thirtieth. Again. My Barbarian art collective returns for an encore presentation of The Fourth Wall — a birthday present performance piece too fantastic to fit into any over-sized birthday cake.
-
Entry12:32 PM on March 31, 2010If you already know what I am about to say, then this event is right up your sixth-sense alley. This Wednesday, author Michael Bodine will read from his memoir Growing Up Psychic: From Skeptic to Believer — recounting his turbulent childhood as a young clairvoyant (as if having acne and braces weren't bad enough for a thirteen-year-old).
-
Entry10:44 AM on March 26, 2010Strange as it seems, the human imagination is drawn to the dystopic. We seek out tales of gritty apocalyptic demise as much as we seek out the idyllic utopias that offer up a more comforting possibility of our future. Cinefamily recognizes this fact and offers not one, not two, but three (three!) apocalyptic films — each with its own take on our far-from-perfect future.
-
Entry11:27 AM on March 25, 2010The old Jeff Garlin was overweight and no friend to the environment. This Thursday drop by Skylight Books and meet the new, smaller, greener Jeff Garlin as he reads from his recent memoir My Footprint. Not only are you guaranteed quite a few laughs, but you might actually find some helpful tips on becoming a smaller, greener you.
-
Entry11:17 AM on March 23, 2010Contrary to its title, this show is not about celebrating a singular artistic iconoclast. Rather, this show is about art's dynamism: pairing da Vinci's studies for sculptural work (never realized) with the impressive sculptural feats of his contemporaries — works dramatically influenced by da Vinci's innovative sketch work concerning the medium. This smartly curated exhibit reminds us that — even in fifteenth-century Italy — no artistic process takes place in a bubble.
-
Entry2:56 PM on March 21, 2010This month, MOCA Pacific Grand snubs the popular notion that What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas with its exhibition set to open this Sunday. Las Vegas Studio features the work of Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Steven Izenour who, in the late sixties, conducted an architectural study of the city — producing a wide range of photographs and films examining the physical structures that dominated and defined mid-century Sin City. A Vegas that is now only a trace of itself.
-
Entry2:18 PM on March 21, 2010Werner Herzog is not normal. But his eccentricities are exactly what makes his films, with their gross complexities and overwhelming passion, so captivating. His protagonists are often broken heroes — men on the road to greatness who take a horribly wrong turn. The Egyptian screens two Herzog films, followed by a discussion with the filmmaker. A chance to peer into the mind of Herzog? — I can't imagine anything more exciting for a Sunday evening.
No recommendations yet.
