Comment2:35 PM on March 2, 2011Good question. If you have a big pot, I would just stick with that and maybe start saving up for a dutch oven. I feel like sometimes buying a cheaper version of what you really want can ultimately be a...

Entry8:00 AM on January 5, 2011Soup is straightforward in theory. It's complexity lies in the execution... in how you build flavors and the first flavor layer can come from a mirepoix. Unlike "soup," "mirepoix" is fun to say and it's the colors of the Irish flag, which makes me like it even more.
-
Entry9:47 AM on December 29, 2010Boy oh boy oh boy. I did some seriously excellent eating this Christmas.

Entry8:00 AM on December 20, 2010They taste good and they look cute. In fact, they taste so good and look so cute, I kind of want them all for myself. But, as my grandmother always said, "the best gift is the one you're tempted to keep."
-
Entry3:31 PM on December 16, 2010Maybe I am a bit of a hippie, a bit of a foodie and a bit of a yuppie. But in a lot of ways, I'm still just that kid hungry to taste what this city has to offer.
-
Entry8:00 AM on December 15, 2010You think you really know a person and then, one December day, you find out they have never had a peanut butter cookie.
-
Comment1:39 PM on December 8, 2010The block of Ivar south of Selma is being traded for, as LAist says, the "block of Ivar north to Hollywood." The market already hits Hollywood, so I think that means the block of Ivar that is North of Hollywood...
-
Entry7:03 AM on December 8, 2010I want to share how important the market is to me. And I'm just one person, one story. The LA Times says 10,000 people a week go to the Hollywood Farmers Market. That is 10,000 stories. 10,000 people with their own market memories.
-
Entry8:00 AM on December 3, 2010It occurred to me that you could eat turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy with a group of people you weren't born into and celebrate friends just like you celebrate family. And so, Friend Thanksgiving was born.
-
Entry7:32 AM on December 1, 2010There was one last page I had dog-eared, Fall Fruit Focaccia. Not only do I like alliteration, I also like focaccia and I still had apples from my apple picking trip.
-
Entry9:31 PM on November 22, 2010I cut across several lanes of traffic to pull into a grocery store when the drizzle falling on my windshield reminded me about the existence of hot chocolate.
-
Comment1:03 PM on November 17, 2010I'm with you @aluxeterna, I would not use scotch for a Hot Toddy because the honey and lemon would bury the taste of scotch. I would use Irish whiskey, or even rye. I ordered a Hot Toddy at the Arclight...
-
Comment12:34 PM on November 17, 2010@joannak I made that apple crumble and it was nom! I love how crispy the topping was. I didn't have any vanilla ice cream, but I did have some leftover buttercream frosting... did the job....
-
Entry9:45 PM on November 16, 2010This is no time to get sick. Therefore: commence Operation Wellness. Operation Wellness is my 3-pronged approached to avoiding illness: garlic, broth, booze.
-
Entry7:58 AM on November 11, 2010I just stood there dumbly wondering how I could get a lid out of a bottom cabinet to cut off oxygen to the fire without setting anything else on fire. Did I mention my pot of potatoes was also boiling over at this point? It was. And the smoke detector started to blare, because apparently yanking it out of the wall didn't turn it off.
-
Entry7:16 AM on November 9, 2010We once took a stroll through the Ferry Building while I was visiting him in San Francisco. Every time I turned around he was chewing something different, culminating with a giant baguette he had tucked under his arm, but within biting distance.
-
Entry6:49 AM on November 5, 2010Have you ever thought about oatmeal? Like really thought about oatmeal? No?! How odd.
-
Entry6:28 AM on November 1, 2010With my dead bread finally on cooling racks, I wanted a change of scene and went for a walk through the closest neighborhood-y looking neighborhood. Seeing carved pumpkins on stoops and tiny dinosaurs roaming the streets reminded me of my own childhood trick-or-treating.
-
Entry7:00 AM on October 29, 2010For a good chunk of my childhood, a few days before Thanksgiving, I got the call: it was time. Time to make Cranberry Applesauce
-
Entry6:30 AM on October 27, 2010Sky Meadow Farm's website promises that "you will experience a very Relaxed and Calm feeling, as if you were set back to a date in time when time was of no importance." They delivered.
-
Entry6:40 AM on October 22, 2010A very skinny woman got a large latte with half soy milk and half low fat milk, 1 shot of regular espresso, 1.5 shots of decaf espresso, two Equal and a tablespoon of whipped cream on the top. She would take a sip and say, "this is the best thing about my day." I believed her.
-
Entry7:16 AM on October 20, 2010I enjoy capitalizing on the flavors of fall and what says "fall" more than pumpkin? Sadly, pumpkin and I broke up last year. Happily, we've reconciled.
-
Entry12:46 PM on October 13, 2010I can't get over how much it tasted like a cake donut. It was ice cream, but it tasted like a donut!
-
Entry9:37 PM on October 4, 2010I'm no meteorologist, but I think the weather has been weird. And when the going gets weird, the weird get cupcakes.
-
Entry7:20 AM on October 1, 2010When I saw those colorful little guys peaking out between the larger candies in the black licorice bridge mix, I grabbed the container. It was Pavlovian.
-
Entry1:15 PM on September 27, 2010And then, like a worm in an apple core, another idea wriggled through my brain... apple butter. Apple butter? Apple butter! APPLE BUTTER
-
Entry10:15 AM on September 22, 2010Camp Fire Girls sold corn on the cob; the Elks Lodge had tri tip dinners (Santa Maria style, of course, and deserving of its own blog entry); the Mormons has strawberry pie; the Foursquares had jambalaya. The Mexican Social Organization sold quesadillas, which I remember being fried and the Filipino Society had lumpia.

Comment3:24 PM on September 21, 2010Does preserving the grit factor for a blooming downtown middle class necessarily mean allowing the people who are at least a part of that grit factor (the poor, the homeless, the addicted who also live downtown) to continue struggling? I...

Entry7:45 AM on September 15, 2010No "decorated houses" allowed in "Sugar Art" and all cakes must be real, except anniversary cakes which can be Styrofoam, but frosting must be fresh.

Comment11:38 AM on August 10, 2010Kate Fulton, I'm glad I could be your egg enabler (egg-abler? en-egg-bler?) Dulce, can you recommend a place to get tortas in the LA area? I haven't tried the mulitas at La Taquiza by USC, but a friend swears by...

Comment9:26 AM on August 10, 2010And speaking of Kelsey McConnell... I'm currently obsessed with the Manila Machine truck. If you see them, immediately find $3 and order lumpiang shanghai. And get me some too, please. http://themanilamachine.com Roaming Hunger, we're pretty into you at my workplace....

Comment9:35 AM on August 6, 2010A research trip to Atlanta is not a tough sell. Those pops do look delightful....
