    10. Dockweiler Beach. Beaching during the day is fine--yes, you'll get your tan--but it's at night that the warm summer air treats its admirers the kindest. And while L.A. beaches often have tight restrictions after sunset, Dockweiler Beach has...

It seems an odd combination: children and film festivals. Balls of energy and hours of silence. But REDCAT's going to try and make it work, breaking the festival down into three two-hour blocks and filling it with a slew of shorts. So strap those tots down, grab some festival corn, and hope for the best. And hey, if that doesn't work, there's always face painting outside.

In Venezuela, Dudamel helped to integrate classical music into the lives and minds of millions of children. Now, in Los Angeles, he's hoping he can do it again. These Symphonies for Youth should hopefully get the creative juices flowing, and the kids inspired. Will it all work? It's too early to tell. For now, just come out to the Disney Hall and enjoy some dancing.

Earth day is upon us, and believe me, it's much more enjoyable to join in the fun than scoff at it on the sidelines. No party is more inviting than that being held in Topanga, where a slew of environmental clean-ups are being accompanied by a collection of after-work festivities. If environmentalism can really be tied to any larger theme, it's that of community creation -- so come get to know some new faces and create some community in this beautiful landscape

Do you remember those summer days when you, the young child, would finally release your pet caterpillar back into nature as a beautiful butterfly? Us either. But that doesn't mean your children can't experience a manufactured version of said 'moment' this Saturday at the Kidspace Children's Museum. When it's bundled up with face paint and home-made wings, this seems like a sure thing -- i.e. a good break -- for the parents. See you there.

Top of the list this week? The Children's Film Festival, put on by REDCAT.

Although some might throw their vote behind The Big Lebowski, make no mistake: Blade Runner remains the quintessential L.A. movie. And twenty-eight years later, it's time to take a seat and consider what this dystopic flick has meant for both the city of Los Angeles and the wider movie industry. Its themes and aesthestic pushed the mold, using film to warn of an unwanted future. So how have subsequent movies used these stylings? And by the way, did our society ever get a clue?

Ron Hubbard was a science fiction writer; this much you know. But do you really know that? Have you wrapped your mind so far around that fact that it's come back completely blown? Sometimes, being told something just isn't enough. You need to see it. And the Golden Age Theatre gives you that chance, performing Hubbard's classic plays every week for the price of a matinee. Did we mention that Ron once miraculously tricked millions of drones into joining a made-up religion? Of course, that has absolutely nothing to do with these plays. Nothing at all.

It's been said time and time again: The next wars will be fought over water. And short of some serious advancement, there's real weight to the claim. Yes, oil is the hot button issue right now, but, rest-assured, that mess will eventually sort itself out in some shape or form. It's this water problem, however, that sits without an answer. So make the trip to Annenberg, and take the time to consider good-old H2O -- you know, that free stuff we take for granted. It's looking pretty nice now, is it not?

Admit it, film has replaced the written word as the central canvas for muckraking journalism. Concise and visually powerful, the medium is better adapted to the online world, able to tackle an issue in the time it takes the average reader to finish the first chapter of his New York Times Bestseller. So how do you make an effective documentary? And what are the rules of distribution? The Egyptian Theatre leads a panel discussion.

Are the democratic ideals of the internet shutting experts out? Some think so, leaving the professionals insecurely clinging to their ivory pedestals. Whether expertise is needed in an industry like art is an interesting question, indeed, and one that should foster a lively debate. But we can all agree that it would be a good thing, for everyone, if internet competition forced academics to end their use of that oppressive professional jargon. Right?

A well-crafted science exhibit offers more fulfillment than most museum experiences. In only seconds, mundane facets of life are transformed, born into fascinating displays of nature's rich complexity. But in today's overstimulating world, it's going to take a darn-good exhibit to grab the attention of your digital children. Thankfully, the California Science Center has pieced together just such an exhibit, carefully developing this simulated exploration through every climate on earth.

If you were hoping to run, it's bad news for you; the registration is over. But if you're like the other 99% of the city, and you just want to watch in a beach chair, then come out this Sunday and enjoy the sweat, agony, and eventual triumph that is the L.A. Marathon. Running twenty-six miles might seem difficult, but from all accounts, it's even harder than that. And hey, anytime you can see someone finish the achievement of a lifetime for free, you've got to go. Right?

For movie buffs, artists, or guys that just have ten bucks and no plans on a Sunday, this is easily worth the price of admission. After months of collecting weirdo clips from anyone willing to send them, the committee has decided upon three hours of worthy footage, just enough to let you feel like you're getting a good deal, but not so much that you find yourself weirded out or, worse yet, searching for the time. Located at the Downtown Independent, the International Surrealist Film Festival -- exaggerated as the name may be -- will leave you pining for a bit more weird in your life.

Face it, personal food politics is an established part of the national conversation. And today, many consider your agricultural apathy to be completely unacceptable. But don't think we're preaching a 'vegetarianism or else' mantra here. All we're saying is that alternatives to the McDonald's diet are more accessible today than they were in the past. So pay some homage to one of those ideas, veganism, by coming out to one of the many Great American Meatout events.

This is one to right home about. It's not very often that a museum allows you to spend the night, and rarer still when to the theme of Noah's Ark -- so many animals! Children must be accompanied by a parents, and, for that matter, parents accompanied by a child, but you'll leave with memories that the two of you will share for the rest of your life. Complete with animal yoga in the morning and more, this slumber party promises to be nothing short of amazing. Get on the boat!

It would be difficult to overstate the influence of Frank Gehry in Los Angeles. Much more than an architect, Gehry and his work have, together, come to define a certain Southern California vision, one that often prioritizes the form of the structure over its requisite function. But is it even possible for buildings, of all things, to accurately represent the complex social makeup of an entire region? Gehry will take a stab at an answer this Thursday, at Santa Monica High School.

It's under our feet and under our fingernails, but what is it? And how did it get there? Dig into the cataclysmic consequences of industrial farming and urban development.
