I would like the public to know that Highland Park has a lot of historic places but no one really pays attention to them.

A connection to nature may not be what people think of first when they think of Highland Park but it was what a group of student producers had in mind on a recent visit to the Audubon Center at Debs Park.

in Departures - Youth VoicesYouth Voices student producers had an opportunity to take a walk around their neighborhood to visit two unique and historic locations in Highland Park. -
Students went out into their school and searched their memories to create a narrative about their time at Franklin High School.

The gravity of the situation is not lost on the students, it's clear that everyone is feeling the stress in one way or another. A large percentage of Highland Park residents are under 30 years old. What value do they see placed on education and how is it made available to them?

The student producers created an interactive representation of what makes their neighborhood unique, rich in stories, and most importantly, what makes it theirs.

It is their personal experiences, memories and a freedom to move within all these places that defines their neighborhood.

It's not only Highland Park the students are exploring and looking to define, it's also the digital environment and their place within it.

The "Meet Me" activity gives the students an opportunity to examine their own identity while utilizing and building on their media and technology skills.

The objectives this week were to familiarize the students with Departures and get them excited to tell their own stories about themselves and Highland Park.
