Eric Garcetti Now Running for Mayor of Los Angeles
Long-speculated, but not surprising: L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti today announced that he is running for Mayor.
"I made it official this morning and took out papers to run for Mayor," he said on Twitter and Facebook after filing papers this morning. "I love LA--the best city in the world--and it is time for focused leadership, innovation, and a vision to inspire this city. I hope to earn your support as we approach Election Day. Together, let's put LA back on top."
The 40-year-old politician is the son of former L.A. County District Attorney Gil Garcetti and was first elected to the city council in 2001. He represents the 13th District and lives in Silver Lake.
He enters the 2013 race already full of other mayoral hopefuls, including former Deputy Mayor Austin Beutner, City Controller Wendy Greuel, City Councilmember Jan Perry and radio host Kevin James. Others like former City Councilmember and L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky may also run.
Garcetti said he was running for mayor to get the economy back on track. "I'll
bring focused leadership based on experience, practical know-how, and a willingness to embrace innovation," he said in a statement.
