Statement on Federal Funding

PBS SoCal & KCET Funding is at Risk

The President’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 Budget is now public and it proposes the elimination of funding for public media – including your Southern California PBS stations.

Our nation’s non-commercial public media is made possible by a uniquely American, entrepreneurial, public-private partnership. Federal funding is the foundation of that partnership, and a recognition of the proven benefits delivered to the American people through public media. The partnership continues with local stations working with their communities to complete the funding process.

Americans rely on public media for high-quality educational and informational programs that are proven to get their children ready to learn, and that provide opportunities for lifelong learning, such as FRONTLINE, NOVA, Nature, and American Experience, as well as regional programming including SoCal Connected, Lost LA and Tending Nature. Federal funding allows public media to continue to tell America’s evolving story in a way that enhances civic engagement and connects us to one another.

The federal investment in public broadcasting accounts for just $1.35 per citizen per year, and is leveraged by local stations like PBS SoCal and KCET to raise additional funds from other sources. We rely on our community and corporate sponsors, as well as our individual supporters and members, to provide the additional funds we require to provide our programs and community services to our Southern California audiences. Please stand with us to share your support for PBS.
