Gun Control
Where do U.S. Senate candidates stand on gun control legislation?

In the wake of the U.S. Senate vote on gun control, this is a fair time to ask where the two candidates to succeed California's current Senator Barbara Boxer stand on the issue.

The Sacramento Bee asked Democrats Loretta Sanchez and Kamala Harris about what legislation they would seek if they won the office. Both said they support more restrictions on guns. Harris would propose measures to “to prevent dangerous people from obtaining guns, enhance background checks laws and renew the assault weapons ban.” Sanchez said she supports “a national database to deter dangerous gun sales, documenting mental health evaluations and more uniform treatment of limits on magazine capacity.” You can read the full article here.

Sanchez and Harris were also asked about gun control during a televised debate in May in the run up to the California primary.

Since this debate took place weeks before the mass shooting in Orlando,  the candidates don’t directly address the gun control proposals the Senate just voted on, but their responses to questions about gun violence leave little doubt about where they stand on the issue.
