Howdy neighbor! Here is a look at stories making the rounds of the SoCal Web.1 - The economy is in free fall, but, on the bright side, so is the price of gas.
From LAist:
In five days, gas prices have dropped more than 10-cents. On October 22 a regular gallon of gas was $3.25, 20-cents less than a week prior to then. Today, the price for the Los Angeles area averages out to $3.137. [full story]
To paraphrase (misquote?) the cop shows, smoke 'em while you got 'em, which is another way to say "don't expect to got 'em for long." Or, as author and profit of doom Jim Kunstler warns:
I hope you're enjoying the temporarily cheap prices at the gas pumps, because this is purely a function of the compressive deleveraging that is going on right now, as contracts and positions held in energy markets are being dumped by everybody and his uncle to raise cash to meet margin calls. My guess is that oil and its byproducts will become much more difficult to get in the months ahead -- not just more expensive, but literally not available. The current falling price of oil has little to do with the real supply and demand fundamentals. It's simply a function of the markets being in near-total disarray. We're running on current inventory, and running it down. [full story]
2 - Californians love absentee and mail-in voting, Angelenos, not so much.
Close to half of Californians registered to vote have requested vote-by-mail ballots for the upcoming election, but only 20.6% of registered voters in LA have asked for the documents.
Anyone have a read for the disparity?
3 - Death of thousand cuts continues at LA's paper of record.
Pixeltown's favorite parts of the LA Times have been given pink slips, including L.A. Now blogger Veronique de Turenne and film critic Carina Chocano. LA Observed has the memo from LA Times editor Russ Stanton.
4 - Muppet traffic cam revenge assault!
Okay, that headline is a lie and this story is technically datelined in Germany. But Pixeltown was caught out recently by a traffic cam and so can't resist the story associated with the grainy black and white image above.
Boing Boing: German police seek speeding British Muppet
Someone in Germany is driving an automobile built for UK roads and has installed a Muppet in the passenger seat. The speed cameras in Germany are made to take photos of drivers who sit in the left side of the vehicle, so drivers of UK-style cars driver can't be easily identified. [full story]
Is that Animal? Pixeltown thinks it's Animal. More of his hijinks below.
