L.A.'s Woeful World Cup Weekend
Last weekend began with so much promise for Los Angeles fans of soccer, football, and futbol. And surely this Monday morning there are plenty of overjoyed, proud supporters (including some TTLA kick-around pals) of Germany, Ghana, Uruguay, and Argentina. But the great majority of the city's soccer fans with national team rooting interests begin the new week knowing they'll have to wait four more years for another chance to see their favorite squads competing in the World Cup.That's because, during 35 sour hours, South Korea, the U.S., England, and Mexico each lost knock-out round matches and were eliminated from the Cup.According to the U.S. Census' most recent "American Community Survey" (2006-2008), the city of Los Angeles is home to 3,749,058 people.1.25 million members of the population are of Mexican descent. 94,000 members of the population are of Korean descent. And while we couldn't immediately find numbers for the English population, we did find this and this. Also perhaps now missing again: a public place to gather, just like we'd hoped for.P.S. -- Yup, the psychic octopus.Photo Credit: The image accompanying this post was taken by Flickr user Bogart_Handsome_Devil.
