Making An Idea Better
Just because someone else thought of it first doesn't mean you can't improve on it.
Taking an original idea and making it better is not new.
For instance:
Friendster > MySpace > Facebook
iPod > iPhone > iPad
Poodle > Golden Retriever > Goldendoodle
Hot Dog > Vienna Sausage > Pig in a Blanket
and so on....
Just because someone else came up with the idea, doesn't mean you can't make it better, a richer experience, more useful to a certain niche or monetarily successful. There is a place deep in our egos that stop us from going further when we hear "oh so-and-so did that already", we stop in our tracks and let our faces drop and mope out the door.
Our world is based on making one idea better, for instance the car:
1823 Samuel Brown invents an internal combustion engine with separate combustion and working cylinders that is based on Francois Isaac de Rivaz's design that wasn't quite there.
1877 Nikolaus Otto builds the four-cycle internal combustion engine, the prototype for modern car engines.
1886 Henry Ford builds his first automobile
1899 Camille Jénatzy builds the electric car that sets a record at 68 mph.
1996 to 1999 GM produced the EV1, a mass produced electric vehicle
1997 Hybrid Toyota Prius. Only one Hybrid is offered to the public.
2010 - 2013 A proposed 33 Hybrid vehicles will go into production.
One idea can spawn a million better ones. Reinventing the wheel is what fires our imagination, we live to make life better, it is in our DNA to evolve and to make the world move forward. Never let anyone tell you that you it has already been done, tell them it just hasn't been done your way.
