Silverlake Walker dies at 58
Marc Abrams, better known by his many monikers — The Silverlake Walker, The Reader Walker, The Walking Doctor — has died at 58. Over the years Abrams has attained a type of ocal celebrity for his constant walking, bronzed and bare-chested, newspaper in hand. (The stretch of Sunset that is home to the KCET station was part of his walking routine.) Abrams has a Facebook fanpage, a writeup in the LA Weekly, and is even depicted on a local mural. The community was fascinated by him. With every lap, Abrams set Silverlake apart -- giving the three-mile neighborhood stretch something quirky and inimitable to lay claim to. He gave us an inside joke, a way to distinguish the outsiders from those of us squarely set inside this geographical and cultural pocket. In a dense, sprawling city like Los Angeles, those that give us an intimate sense of place are priceless. Marc Abrams, you will be missed.
