How can the police work with communities to make them safer?
In Los Angeles, the relationship between police officers and residents has been tumultuous, with acute tensions in the LAPD’s South Bureau neighborhoods. Over the past few decades, it has appeared that the LAPD is seeking to improve its policing tactics by disbanding aggressive CRASH units that dominated the ‘80s and ‘90s and turning to strategies that focus on establishing trust within communities. Still, in the wake of the 1991 Rodney King beating and more recent abuses, policing methods continue to be criticized and controversial.
