How has public media influenced your life?
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the government agency created to invest taxpayer money in public broadcasting, is at risk of being defunded by the current administration, along with funding for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Public media focuses on education and community service, and amplifying critical issues that would otherwise remain unheard. Underserved and rural areas have access to educational programming commercial-free. Some Americans feel that government should stay out of the business of broadcasting and stations should be able to sustain themselves by other means. Others maintain that the beneficial impact of public media comes at such a minimal cost (less than $1 per American) compared to the valuable contribution it makes to society.
