Food Weekend: Opening Night at The Bowl, Garden Parties Galore, The Dude Abides

Summer is officially here, and that means all sorts of outdoor gardening activities and other food-based events. Let's go through some, shall we?

Friday night brings the true marker of summer starting in L.A.: Opening Night of the Hollywood Bowl. Head into Hollywood early in order to beat the traffic, settle in for a nice picnic in the park (perhaps using our recommendations), sit back, relax, and watch Reba McEntire and Chaka Khan do their thing.

If you can't get tickets to the Bowl, maybe head on over to Highland Park as Urban Rancho, the self-proclaimed "sustainable garden party," takes over Sycamore Grove Park's bandshell for an evening of partying for adults and children alike. The line-up includes food demos, crafts, close-up magic, storytelling, a talk entitled "Los Angeles in Maps," and a handful of bands.

Saturday morning down in Watts, the Greater Watts Community Garden is throwing a garden party as a way to show children how much fun it is to grow your own food. The party will feature cooking demonstrations, a presentation on how to start a garden in your own community, some craft activities for the kids, and a tour given by the coordinator of the garden.

Saturday morning in Corona del Mar, the Sherman Library & Gardens begins its series of Weekend Gardener classes with a lesson all about creating fragrance in your garden. The free class will be taught by Carol Younger, the Sherman Gardens Color Specialist, and she'll be discussing how to use a variety of plants in order to create a specific and enchanting fragrance in your own home garden. No reservation needed to take the class.

Saturday night down in Santa Monica, the Eat|See|Hear series continues with a screening of the wonderful Coen Brothers' film "The Big Lebowski." Music will be performed beforehand by George Glass, and food trucks Brats Berlin, Mandoline Grill, M.O.E., PhillyPlease, and India Jones will be on-hand to provide mid-movie noshing. But, c'mon, do you need any more of a reason to see "The Big Lebowski" besides the fact that someone, anyone is showing it?
