'1917' Brings the Great War to the Winter KCET Cinema Series on November 26
Q&A immediately following with Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins and composer Thomas Newman.
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield ("Captain Fantastic’s" George MacKay) and Blake ("Game of Thrones’" Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers — Blake’s own brother among them.
The film also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Claire Duburcq, Colin Firth, Richard Madden, Andrew Scott and Mark Strong. “1917” is the first big screen project for Sam Mendes since his work on the James Bond 007 franchise with "Skyfall" and "Spectre." Working with Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins, the film was designed to look at though it was shot in real time in one single long take.
“It was fundamentally an emotional choice,” Mendes said. “I wanted to travel every step with these men — to breathe every breath with them. It needed to be visceral and immersive. What they are asked to do is almost impossibly difficult. The way the movie is made is designed to bring you as close as possible to that experience.”
The film screens at 7:00 p.m. at the ArcLight Cinemas in Sherman Oaks. Immediately following the screening, Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, will moderate a Q&A session with Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins and composer Thomas Newman. “1917” will be released on December 25, 2019.
The winter season of the KCET Cinema Series runs October 22 through December 10. The winter series is sold out and there will not be walk-up admissions available for the screenings.
