2017 Summer KCET Cinema Series Schedule
The much anticipated KCET Cinema Series opens its summer series at the historic Aero Theatre in Santa Monica on Tuesday, June 6. The popular film series offers film enthusiasts an opportunity to see the best of Hollywood, independent and top award-winning festival films prior to their theatrical release in Los Angeles. The series is hosted by nationally recognized film expert Pete Hammond, and each screening is followed by a lively Q & A with the film's top talent and filmmakers.
Film screenings are held on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 PM and all seats are general admission. The dates for the summer series are June 6, 13, 20, 27, July 5 (Wednesday due to the Fourth of July holiday), July 11, 18, 25 and August 1.

Passes will also be available at the Aero Theatre on Tuesdays prior to the screening. Limited walk-up admissions are available on the night of each screening for $25 per person. You may also call 747-201-5402, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., to reserve an advanced pass to the screening.

Summer Film Schedule:
June 6 - THE HERO
Legendary actor Sam Elliott stars as an aging Western film star who is suddenly forced to confront his own mortality when he is faced with a life-threatening condition. The film by writer/director Bret Haley (I'll See You In My Dreams) is a sensitive and beautifully told story. It was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
Q&A immediately follows the screening with director Brett Haley and actors Sam Elliott and Nick Offerman.
June 13 - THE BIG SICK
The Big Sick is based on the real-life courtship of comedian and actor Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) and writer Emily Gordon. In the film, Kumail a Pakistan-born comedian meets graduate student Emily (Zoe Kazan) at one of his stand-up gigs. A casual encounter becomes a real-life romance and together they must navigate the issues of his traditional Muslim family and Emily's parents when she is faced with a mysterious illness and Kumail must take charge of the situation and both families. The cast includes Holly Hunter and Ray Romano. The film had its world premiere at this year's Sundance film Festival.

June 20 - THE BEGUILED
The film is based on the novel The Beguiled by Thomas P. Cullinan and it recently garnered director Sofia Coppola the prize of Best Director at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. It marked the first time in 50 years a woman won the award and only the secondtime in the history of the film festival.
The story focuses on a girls' school in Virginia during the Civil War where the young women are sheltered from the realities of the outside world, a wounded Union soldier is taken in and soon this isolated environment becomes overwhelmed by sexual
tension, rivalries, and unexpected events.

June 27- GOOD FORTUNE
The latest film from the award-winning team of documentary filmmakers Joshua Tickell and Rebecca Harrell Tickell, the film tells the fascinating tale of the rag to riches story of John Paul DeJoria entrepreneur, philanthropist and self-made billionaire. He is best known as a co-founder of the Paul Mitchell line of hair products and The Patrón Spirits Company.

JULY 5 - WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES
The film is the threequel to the successful Planet of the Ape franchise, directed and co-written by Matt Reeves who also directed Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 2014. The storyline continues with the character of Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his shrewdness of apes locked in deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel (Woody Harrelson).

JULY 11- AFFLICTION
A small town sheriff investigates the murder of a wealthy business man, an investigation that threatens his personal and professional life. The cast stars James Coburn, Nick Nolte, Sissy Spacek and William Dafoe. The film garnered an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for James Coburn and the film received numerous award nominations, including a Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award.
Q&A precedes the film with JPCF Executive Director Lynda Erkiletian and Robyn Coburn.
JULY 18- DUNKIRK
The most anticipated film of the season directed by top-grossing director Christopher Nolan and music score by Academy Award winning composer Hans Zimmer. The film is about The Battle of Dunkirk during the World War II between the Allies and Nazi Germany. In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were skillfully evacuated from the beach using every naval and civilian vessel that could be recruited. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated.

JULY 25- PATTI CAKE$
A coming-of-age story straight out of Jersey, an unlikely rapper finds her voice as a one-of-a-kind hip-hop legend in the making in PATTI CAKE$, the first feature film from acclaimed commercial and music-video director Geremy Jasper. Set in the backdrop of a gritty strip-mall suburbia, PATTI CAKE$ chronicles an underdog’s quest for fame and glory with humor, raw energy and some unforgettable beats.

AUGUST 1- THE ONLY LIVING BOY IN NEW YORK
The film’s central character is a recently graduated college student who begins a romantic relationship with his father’s mistress. The film stars Callum Turner, Kate Beckinsale, Pierce Brosnan, Cynthia Nixon, and Jeff Bridges and directed by Marc Preston Webb.
