2018 Winter KCET Cinema Series Schedule

Avid moviegoers have the unique opportunity to preview the most anticipated films of the season and hear a lively post-screening Q&A with the on-screen talent and filmmakers.
Film screenings are held at the ArcLight Cinemas in Sherman Oaks on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM. The screening dates are: October 23, 30, November 6, 13, 20, 27, December 4 and 11.

OCTOBER 23 A PRIVATE WAR AVIRON PICTURES
Matthew Heineman's film chronicles the life and work of legendary war correspondent Marie Colvin, portrayed on screen by Rosamund Pike. The drama is based on the 2012 Vanity Fair article ‘Marie Colvin’s Private War’ by Marie Brenner, and follows the journalist for The Sunday Times as she jeopardizes her life in pursuit of the truth on the front lines of wars and conflicts around the globe. The cast includes Jamie Dornan (The Fall, Fifty Shades of Grey), Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones, Spotlight), and Tom Hollander (The Night Manager).

OCTOBER 30 BOY ERASED FOCUS FEATURES
Based on the 2016 memoir of Garrard Conley, this true story recounts how a young man (Lucas Hedges) in a small Arkansas town struggles with his homosexuality and being forced by his father, a Baptist pastor (Russell Crowe), to attend a conversion-therapy group. His mother (Nicole Kidman) eventually realizes the program is wrong and fights to remove her son from it.

NOVEMBER 6 THE FRONT RUNNER SONY PICTURES
The film looks back at the 1988 presidential race and Senator Gary Hart, the Democratic candidate who seems to have a winning path to the White House and enjoys particularly strong appeal with idealistic young voters. When allegations of an extramarital affair surface in the news media, Hart’s (Hugh Jackman) campaign abruptly derails, together with his personal life. Based on the 2014 book "All The Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid", by Matt Bai. Cast includes Vera Farmiga, Molly Ephraim, Kaitlyn Dever, J.K. Simmons, and Alfred Molina.

NOVEMBER 13 STAN & OLLIE SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
As one of the world’s most famous comedy teams, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy made over 107 films together between 1927 and 1950. They were among few stars who were able to transition successfully from silent films to the 'Talkies'. Jon S. Baird’s film, starring Steve Coogan as Laurel and John C. Reilly as Hardy, is a touching portrait of two best friends, creative partners and beloved Hollywood stars as they embark on a tour of musical halls across Britain and Ireland, their reign as kings of slapstick comedy behind them and an uncertain future ahead.

NOVEMBER 20 GREEN BOOK UNIVERSAL PICTURES
Based on the true story of a black concert pianist who in the 1960s hires an ill-mannered New York City bouncer to chauffeur him on a concert tour in the Jim Crow South. Starring Academy Award® winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Hidden Figures) and Academy Award® nominee Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises, The Lord of the Rings trilogy). The film's title refers to an actual travel guidebook that assisted African-American motorists in coping with discriminatory laws, whites-only gas and service stations, and restaurants and hotels that refused services during the segregation era in America.

NOVEMBER 27 ALL IS TRUE SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
When the renowned Globe Theatre in London burns to the ground during a performance of William Shakespeare's play Henry VIII, the 49-year-old playwright, poet and actor returns to his home in Stratford-upon-Avon to face a troubled past and his disregarded family. The film takes its title from an alternate name for his play Henry VIII. It stars and is directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh, who at the age 23, became the youngest actor in the Royal Shakespeare Company to play the lead in Shakespeare's Henry V -- made into a film by Branagh in 1989. Co-stars include two KCET Cinema Series Lumière Award recipients: Dame Judi Dench as Shakespeare’s wife Anne Hathaway, and Sir Ian McKellen as Henry Wriothesley, the Duke of Southampton.

DECEMBER 4 ON THE BASIS OF SEX FOCUS FEATURES
The film tells an inspiring and spirited true story that follows young lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Felicity Jones) as she teams with her husband Marty (Armie Hammer) to bring a groundbreaking case before the U.S. Court of Appeals and overturn a century of gender discrimination. The film will premiere this year to correspond with Justice Ginsburg’s 25th anniversary on the Supreme Court.

DECEMBER 11 IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK ANNAPURNA PICTURES
Based on the novel by James Baldwin and directed by Academy Award-winning director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), this dramatic film is set in 1970s Harlem. Friends since childhood, young mom-to-be Tish (Kiki Layne) and her artist fiancé Fonny (Stephan James) dream of a future together, but everything is derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit.
