'A Private War' Opens the Winter KCET Cinema Series on October 23

Matthew Heineman's film chronicles the life and work of legendary war correspondent Marie Colvin, portrayed on screen by Rosamund Pike. The drama is based on the 2012 Vanity Fair article ‘Marie Colvin’s Private War’ by Marie Brenner, and follows the journalist as she jeopardizes her life in pursuit of the truth on the front lines of wars and conflicts around the globe. The cast includes Jamie Dornan ("The Fall," "Fifty Shades of Grey"), Stanley Tucci ("The Lovely Bones," "Spotlight") and Tom Hollander ("The Night Manager").

Heineman muses, “We seem to be living in a post-truth era, where facts are often traded for blatant falsehoods, as dictators, terrorists and politicians alike utilize propaganda for personal gain. The devastating result is that people often don’t know who or what to believe. Facts seem to be malleable. Journalism is under attack and becoming increasingly polarized with fabricated ‘news’ masquerading as real journalism.”

Deeply concerned by the threats this poses to society, Heineman became inspired to make “A Private War” about legendary war correspondent Marie Colvin. One of the most-celebrated journalists of our time, Colvin was an utterly fearless and rebellious spirit, prepared to take enormous risks to get a story. She was steely under fire, but what truly set her apart, more than anything else, was her deep desire to show the true human suffering caused by war.

“A Private War” will be released in theaters on November 2 by Aviron Pictures. A Q&A session will immediately follow the screening with director/producer Matthew Heineman, writer Arash Amel, as well as host and Deadline film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen in KCET’s Must See Movies.

Deadline.com is the presenting sponsor for the winter season of the KCET Cinema Series. The series runs October 23 through December 11. The film screens at 7 p.m. at the ArcLight Cinemas in Sherman Oaks. The winter series is sold out and there will not be walk-up admissions available for the screenings.
