“All you can control in life is how you respond to life.” That’s the mantra of a prison counselor played by Morgan Freeman and a message that weaves throughout "Brian Banks," a new film from Bleecker Street.

Directed by Tom Shadyac, the film is based on the true story of Brian Banks (portrayed by Aldis Hodge), a Long Beach high school football star who is falsely accused of a rape crime he didn’t commit. Even with the lack of evidence, Banks is convicted and sent to prison for a decade. Years later with the incredible support of the California Innocence Project’s Justin Brooks (played by Greg Kinnear) he is exonerated of all charges and ultimately fulfills his lifelong dream of playing football for the NFL and eventually the Atlanta Falcons.

The film screens at 7:00 p.m. at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, will moderate a Q&A following the screening with producer Amy Baer and subject Brian Banks. "Brian Banks" will be released in theatres by Bleecker Street on August 9, 2019.

The summer season of the KCET Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Deadline.com. The season began on June 4 and runs through July 23. The first six dates will be held at the historic Aero Theatre on June 4, 11, 18, 25, July 2 and 9. The last two dates will be held at the Landmark Theatre on July 16 and 23.
