Fall 2016 KCET Cinema Series Schedule

The Fall KCET Cinema Series is back at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. The series previews new Hollywood and independent films prior to their theatrical release.

Hosted by nationally recognized film expert Pete Hammond, each film is followed by a lively Q & A with the talent or filmmaker.

The series runs August 16 – October 10.  Screenings are held on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm with the exception of the following two screenings which will be held on alternative nights due to the Jewish holidays: Wednesday, October 5 and Monday, October 10.Films screen August 16 to October 10 on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 PM.

If you would still like to attend the Fall Cinema Series, prorated series passes are available at the Aero Theatre on Tuesdays prior to the screening. Limited walk-up admissions are also available on the day of each screening for $25 per person. You may also call 747-201-5402, between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, to reserve an advanced pass to the screening.

August 16- THE SEA OF TREES

The Sea of Trees Official Trailer 1 (2016) - Naomi Watts Movie

A compelling story of love and redemption from director Gus Van Sant.  The film stars Matthew McConaughey with Ken Watanabe and Naomi Watts in this spiritual, life-changing journey of friendship and self-examination.

The backdrop for the film is Japan’s famous Aokigahara, also known as the Suicide Forest or Sea of Trees; it is a 35-square-kilometre forest that is located at the northwest base of Mount Fuji in Japan.

August 23- THE HOLLARS

The Hollars Official Trailer 1 (2016) - John Krasinski Movie

The film is directed by and stars John Krasinski and co-stars Anna Kendrick and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The central character of the film is a young artist living in New York City who is forced to return to his family home in Middle America to deal with his gravely ill mother, dysfunctional family, former high school sweetheart and the pregnant girlfriend he left behind in New York.

August 30- MISS STEVENS

Miss Stevens Film

The screenplay is co-written by Julia Hart and Jordon Horowitz and marks the directorial debut of Julia Hart. The film premiered at SXSW in spring of this year and won the Best Actress and Special Jury Prize for lead actress Lily Rabe. The storyline focuses on a high school teacher who is at a crossroads in her personal life and finds that she must chaperone three of her students to a drama competition where she ultimately finds the experience life-changing.

September 6- SNOWDEN

SNOWDEN - Official Trailer

From Academy Award winning director Oliver Stone, the film follows the American whistleblower Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) a former National Security Agency subcontractor who made headlines in 2013 when he leaked top confidential information about the National Security Agency’s surveillance activities.

Q & A immediately following with producer Eric Kopeloff and co-producer Rob Wilson.

September 13- MR. CHURCH

Mr. Church Official Trailer (2016) Eddie Murphy, Britt Robertson Drama Movie HD

The film is about a lifelong friendship that develops between a single mother, her young daughter and a cook named Henry Joseph Church (Eddie Murphy). A temporary arrangement of Mr. Church’s employment in the household instead turns into fifteen years and creates a personal bond that lasts forever.  The film had its premiere at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival and is directed by Oscar-nominated director Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy).

September 20- A MAN CALLED OVE

A Man Called Ove Trailer English subs

Swedish comedy hit has been selected by the Swedish Film Institute to compete for a foreign-language Oscar nomination.  The film is based on Fredrik Backman’s best-selling novel Ove which is the quintessential angry old man next door story.  One of Sweden’s biggest locally-produced box office hits, the film grossed more than $20.5 million in Sweden alone.  The film stars Rolf Lassgard whose performance won him the Best Actor award at the Guldbagge Awards (Sweden’s Academy Awards).   Hannes has been nominated for the Guldbagge Award three times.  The film is in Swedish with English subtitles.

September 27- DENIAL

DENIAL Official Trailer (2016) Rachel Weisz, Andrew Scott Movie

The film is based on the Deborah E. Lipstadt book History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier.  The film recounts the story of Lipstadt’s (Rachel Weisz) legal fight for historical truth against writer David Irving (Timothy Spall), who accused her of slander when she declares him a Holocaust denier.

October 5- JAMES COBURN FILM NIGHT- THE CAREY TREATMENT

A rare opportunity to see this archival  print of the 1972 MGM film directed by Blake Edwards starring James Coburn and Jennifer O'Neill.

October 10- AMERICAN PASTORAL

AMERICAN PASTORAL Official Trailer (2016) Ewan McGregor, Jennifer Connelly

The Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Philip Roth is brought to the big screen by first-time director Ewan McGregor who also stars in the film.  The story chronicles a privileged American family whose lives are ever changed by the social and political turmoil of the 1960s and 1970s.  The film co-stars Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Connelly, Rupert Evans and Valorie Curry.
