Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill in 'Darkest Hour' Kicks Off KCET’s Winter Cinema Series October 24

Oscar-nominated, KCET Lumiere Award-Winning Actor Gary Oldman Scheduled to Attend Q&A

Within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent (and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him), Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.

Director Joe Wright has high praise for Oldman’s performance, “I think all truly great actors have the ability to project their imagination beyond themselves. So, their imagination is projected into the space, and the audience’s imagination meets it there and together they create this character together. It’s a kind of strange, magical process. And it’s really about the power of imagination, as any art form is. There are amazing techniques and there are amazing skills. There’s an extraordinary depth and well of emotion that’s he’s able to draw from and power. But, really, it’s the power of imagination that creates the performance in the mind of the audience.”

The film also stars Lily James and Ben Mendelsohn. “Darkest Hour” will be released in theatres by Focus Features on November 22. Gary Oldman, Oscar-nominated actor and recipient of the KCET Lumiere Award, will join KCET Cinema Series and Must See Movies host Pete Hammond for a Q&A immediately following the screening.
