'Greta' Brings a Mysterious Friendship to the Spring KCET Cinema Series on February 26
Q&A immediately following with Academy Award-winning director Neil Jordan ("The Crying Game," "Interview with the Vampire") and actor Chloë Grace Moretz.
This suspense thriller begins with Frances (Chloë Grace Moretz) finding a purse on the New York City subway. She returns it to its owner, a lonely and eccentric piano teacher named Greta (Isabelle Huppert). As they become closer and closer friends, Greta’s motherly charms dissolve into progressively disturbing ways and Frances discovers that nothing in Greta’s life is what it seems.
The filmmakers drew inspiration from master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock. Simultaneously, "Greta" is a contemporary thriller in the vein of films such as "Fatal Attraction" and "Misery," with various twists and turns that the audience might not see coming. Huppert, who was nominated for an Academy Award ® and won a Golden Globe ® for her performance in the 2016 movie "Elle," interpreted the script as an ambiguous love story.
"Greta is attracted to Frances for her beauty, her youth, her innocence," said Huppert. "You can read it as a mother-daughter relationship, which fits the situation of Chloë Grace’s character. Frances is perfect prey because she seeks a mother figure at this moment of her life. But it's not only a mother-daughter relationship - it's something more strange. In this film, it was important to leave a feeling of ambiguity. Something you can never really nail precisely. Is it love, attraction, a mother-daughter relationship? Nothing is defined."
The film screens at 7:00 p.m. at the ArcLight Cinemas in Sherman Oaks. Immediately following the screening, Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, will moderate a Q&A session with Academy Award-winning director Neil Jordan ("The Crying Game," "Interview with the Vampire") and actor Chloë Grace Moretz. "Greta" will be released by Focus Features on March 1, 2019.
