Harrelson and Costner are 'The Highwaymen' Hunting Bonnie and Clyde at the Spring KCET Cinema Series on March 26
Q&A immediately following with director John Lee Hancock.
While history often romanticizes iconic criminal lovers Bonnie and Clyde, it’s high time equal glory is shared with another duo who brought them to justice. When the full force of the FBI and the latest forensic technology aren't enough to capture two of America's most wanted criminals, detectives and former Texas Rangers Frank Hamer (KCET Lumière Award recipient Kevin Costner) and Maney Gault (Woody Harrelson) use their old school skills and gut instincts to track and bring down Bonnie and Clyde. Supported by strong female characters played by Kim Dickens and Kathy Bates, the film is a true crime story set in the 1930s from award-winning director John Lee Hancock ("Saving Mr. Banks," "The Blind Side").
“I was really drawn to what made these two characters want to do this,” begins Hancock, a native Texan. "The lore surrounding the Texas Rangers is very real when you grow up in Texas; they were larger than life, mythic figures, and still are. Frank Hamer was perhaps the most known Texas Ranger in history and had already had a long and storied career. But when Lee Simmons comes to him and says: I need you to do this for me and we both know why, we can see that it’s galling to Frank Hamer that Bonnie and Clyde are famous for something they should be ashamed of.”
The film screens at 7:00 p.m. at the ArcLight Cinemas in Sherman Oaks. Immediately following the screening, Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, will moderate a Q&A session with director John Lee Hancock. “The Highwaymen” will be released by Netflix on March 29, 2019.
