'Mank' Is the Uncertain Story of Hollywood’s 'Citizen Kane' at the Virtual KCET Cinema Series on Dec. 4
Q&A immediately following with Gary Oldman, Oscar winning-actor and KCET Cinema Series Lumière Award recipient.
Directed by seven-time Oscar-winning director David Fincher, the drama centers on inebriated Hollywood screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman) as he struggles with brilliant but controversial Orson Welles (Tom Burke) to finish his masterpiece, "Citizen Kane." Written by his late father, Jack Fincher, "Mank" is the story of the writing of "Citizen Kane" and also a startling, insightful and humorous exploration of creation, addiction and the search for self-respect. An ensemble cast also includes Lily Collins, Amanda Seyfried, Charles Dance and more.
The script for "Mank" developed from a conversation between father and son thirty years ago. The resulting film is a period piece, a fascinating reflection of Hollywood’s Golden Age and a thought-provoking story of one man’s search for self-worth. “I think he ultimately felt he was slumming,” says Fincher, explaining how Mankiewicz thought screenwriting was beneath him. “And it was only when the handcuffs were off and he didn’t have to answer to the entertainment machine – and he was helping somebody [Orson Welles] interested in the sharp stick in the eye — that he was challenged. And found a degree of self-respect.”
Immediately following the screening, Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, will moderate a Q&A with Gary Oldman, Oscar winning-actor and KCET Cinema Series Lumière Award recipient.
The film screens on Friday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. PST. Only $10 per viewing link. Limited space available.
