Margot Robbie As 'I, Tonya' Skates Into KCET’s Winter Cinema Series November 21
Director Craig Gillespie and Writer/Producer Steven Rogers Scheduled to Attend Q&A
The well-publicized story of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie) whose ex-husband (Sebastian Stan) arranged for a man to break the knee of rival skater Nancy Kerrigan (Caitlin Carver) at the 1994 National Figure Skating Championship. The criminal act cost Harding a national title and banned her from competitive figure skating in the U.S. for life.
“It was fascinating to really get Tonya’s backstory,” director Craig Gillespie explains. Using the contradictory accounts from Rogers’ interviews with Tonya and her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, the film cleverly presents several viewpoints. “We found in the edit [that] we made that deliberately less clear, so the audience had to concentrate to work out what version we were telling at that moment,” Gillespie said.
The film also stars Allison Janney as Harding’s mother. "I, Tonya" will be released in theaters by Neon on December 8 following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Director Craig Gillespie will join KCET Cinema Series and Must See Movies host Pete Hammond for a Q&A immediately following the screening.
