"Affliction" tells the story of Wade Whitehouse, a small-town policeman in New Hampshire. Detached from the people around him, including a dominating father and a divorced wife, he becomes obsessed with the solving of a fatal hunting accident, leading to a series of tragic events. Written and directed by Paul Schrader, the star-studded cast features James Coburn, Nick Nolte, Sissy Spacek and Willem Dafoe. The 1997 film garnered an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for James Coburn and received numerous award nominations, including a Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award. JPCF Executive Director Lynda Erkiletian and Robyn Coburn will join Must See Movies host Pete Hammond for a Q&A immediately following the screening.

In The New York Times, Janet Maslin wrote "[Nick Nolte] gives the performance of his career in Paul Schrader's quietly stunning new film…Like The Sweet Hereafter, a more meditative and elegant but less immediate, volcanic film, Affliction finds the deeper meaning in an all too believable tragedy."

The summer season of the KCET Cinema Series is generously sponsored by the James and Paula Coburn Foundation and in partnership with the official media sponsor for Cinema Series, Deadline.com. The season began on June 6th and runs through August 1st. Prorated season passes as well as individual admissions for $25 each are available at the door. The film will begin at 7 p.m. at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica (1328 Montana Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90403), nearby street parking is available.
