“Women will only have true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg

While many credit Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In” as sparking a conversation around gender equality, her idea followed the example of a true feminist icon. “On the Basis of Sex” tells an inspiring and spirited true story that follows young lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Felicity Jones) as she teams with her husband Marty (Armie Hammer) to bring a groundbreaking case before the U.S. Court of Appeals and overturn a century of gender discrimination. The film will premiere this year timed to Justice Ginsburg’s 25th anniversary on the Supreme Court.

When we first meet her, Ruth is attending Harvard Law School along with her husband, Marty. As she learns to balance life as a mother with her role as a law student, Ruth faces adversity in a male-dominated, often hostile, environment in which she is only one of nine women in her class. Ginsburg has said, “For most girls growing up in the 40s, the most important degree was not your B.A., but your M.R.S."

Fast-forward to the 70s and she would achieve several of her many firsts: first female tenured professor at Columbia University, first woman to be on two major law reviews, co-founder of the first law journal in the U.S. to focus exclusively on women’s rights, co-author of the first law school casebook on sex discrimination and a lifelong career where she would battle discrimination on behalf of so many.

The film screens at 7:00 p.m. at the ArcLight Cinemas in Sherman Oaks. Immediately following the screening, Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, will moderate a Q&A session with producer Jonathan King, editor Michelle Tesoro and cinematographer Michael Grady. “On the Basis of Sex” will be released by Focus Features on December 25, 2018.

Deadline.com is the presenting sponsor for the winter season of the KCET Cinema Series, which runs October 23 through December 11. The winter series is sold out and there will not be walk-up admissions available for the screenings.
