“Having a baby is an immoral act. Overpopulation, climate change, rise of neo-fascism …” Rachel (Kathryn Hahn) says in the trailer for Netflix’s new movie "Private Life. Still, Rachel and her husband Richard (Paul Giamatti) are desperately trying every option: fertility clinics, adoption, surrogacy and donor eggs. Oscar®-nominated filmmaker Tamara Jenkins (“The Savages”) has made a no holds barred dramedy about marriage and family, set against Rachel and Richard’s struggle with conception.

At a most convenient moment, their niece Sadie (newcomer Kayli Carter), a college dropout, arrives for an extended visit. This look at the most intimate tensions in a marriage is sure to strike a chord with audiences…whether they be child free, empty nesters or struggling to conceive. Better still, it’s a reminder that life is full of uncertainty and begs revisiting the old Yiddish proverb, “We plan, God laughs.” All we can do is hold on tight to each other and try to enjoy the ride.

Says Jenkins, “’Private Life’ is about a pair of late-bloomers outgrowing their unconventional lifestyle and frantically seeking a toehold in adulthood by becoming parents. Richard and Rachel are a modern, highly neurotic Tracy and Hepburn-like couple caught in a primal battle of the sexes as they descend into the weird world of assisted reproduction and domestic adoption.”

“Private Life” will be released in theaters on October 5 by Netflix. A Q&A session will immediately follow the screening with producer Stefanie Azpiazu as well as host and Deadline film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen in KCET’s Must See Movies. The fall season of the KCET Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Deadline.com. The season began on August 14 and runs through October 9. Season passes are available online via Eventbrite and individual admissions are available at the door for $30 each.
