At the 1996 Olympics, American security guard Richard Jewell (portrayed by Paul Walter Hauser) saves thousands of lives from an exploding bomb but is vilified by journalists and the press who falsely report that he was a terrorist. The supporting cast includes Jon Hamm, Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde, Kathy Bates and more. Directed and produced by Clint Eastwood and written by Billy Ray, the film is based on the 1997 article "American Nightmare: The Ballad of Richard Jewell" by Marie Brenner and published in Vanity Fair.

At a recent post-screening Q&A, Eastwood said. "I think it's a great American tragedy that this man — everybody went after him, and I realized how it happened. The people — Atlanta never had a huge thing like the Olympics," he added. "In two, three days they have this horrible bombing and they have to get somebody and they happen to get the first person. And it happened to be Richard Jewell, and everybody just sold out and didn't offer the basics of the American system, which is innocent until proven guilty. The FBI and media were unkind. It shows that good people can do bad things and you have to swing with it. But Richard Jewell was a kind person and he got a bad deal."

The film screens at 7:00 p.m. at the ArcLight Cinemas in Sherman Oaks. Immediately following the screening, Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, will moderate a Q&A session with Oscar-winning editor Joel Cox and Supervising Sound Editor Alan Murray. “Richard Jewell” will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on December 13, 2019.

The winter season of the KCET Cinema Series runs October 22 through December 10. The winter series is sold out and there will not be walk-up admissions available for the screenings.
