She’s Leaving Home: Greta Gerwig’s 'Lady Bird' Flies Into KCET’s Winter Cinema Series November 1

Writer and director Greta Gerwig is scheduled to attend Q&A.

In "Lady Bird," Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, probing both the humor and agony of the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against, but is exactly like her loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. As a fiercely independent high school senior, Lady Bird yearns to go to college in New York so that she can get out of her humdrum Sacramento hometown. Set in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships and beliefs that define us…and the unmatched nostalgia of home.

Gerwig muses, “I grew up in Sacramento and I love Sacramento, so the initial impulse to make the film was a desire to write a love letter to a place that only came into focus after I left. It is difficult to register the depths of your love when you are sixteen and quite sure that ‘life’ is happening somewhere else. None of the events in the film literally happened, but there is a core of truth that is connected to a feeling of home and childhood and departure.”

The film also stars Lucas Hedges and Lois Smith. "Lady Bird" will be released in theaters by A24 Films on November 3 after its world premiere earlier this year at the Telluride Film Festival. Writer and Director Greta Gerwig will join KCET Cinema Series and Must See Movies host Pete Hammond for a Q&A immediately following the screening.
