"The Goldfinch" is the film adaptation of Donna Tartt's globally acclaimed bestseller of the same name, which won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and spent more than 30 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list. Theodore "Theo" Decker (Ansel Elgort) was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day...a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch: The Goldfinch. The film also stars Finn Wolfhard, Sarah Paulson, Luke Wilson, Jeffrey Wright and Nicole Kidman in supporting roles.

At Cinema Con in April, Elgort said of the adaptation, “I hope that people find a piece of themselves in the story and I hope that whatever drew all those people to that book will also draw them to this movie. I think they will be drawn to this movie, because they did a pretty great job capturing that tone and telling this epic story.”

The film screens at 7:00 p.m. at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, will moderate a pre-screening conversation with film critic Leonard Maltin. “The Goldfinch” will be released in theatres on September 13, 2019.

The fall season of the KCET Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Deadline.com. The season begins on August 13 and runs through October 1. Season passes are available online and individual admissions are available at the door for $30 each. The Aero Theatre is located at 1328 Montana Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90403 and nearby parking is available. To learn more about the series call 201.747.5238.
