'The Secrets We Keep' Is a Suspenseful Story of Justice at the Virtual KCET Cinema Series on Oct. 14

Rebuilding her life after World War II in a quiet American suburb with her husband (Chris Messina), a woman (Noomi Rapace) kidnaps her neighbor (Joel Kinnaman) to seek revenge and justice for the war crimes she believes he committed against her in a Nazi labor camp.
Although “The Secrets We Keep” raises some weighty moral questions, Adler says that first and foremost he set out to make a tight, compulsively watchable thriller driven by powerful performances from its main cast members. “This is my first experience working with Hollywood movie stars,” the director says. “They are very different actors and it has been interesting seeing how their personalities and techniques intermix. I tried to write specifically for each one and they have given me lots of opportunities to do that.”
A good thriller, says Adler, needs to keep the plot moving constantly, carrying the audience along with it. “This story has a minimal setup and then unexpected things propel the action,” says the writer-director. “The characters are making life-and-death decisions and the actors need to sustain that intensity throughout. They keep the audience wondering who is telling the truth.”
Immediately following the screening, Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, will moderate a Q&A with writer and award-winning director Yuval Adler.
